Professional Values

Edward Baker Performance is founded on three values that are central to everything we do:

  1. Practice beats theory. “In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.” Albert Einstein. For me there is no theory without practice – I will not recommend something unless I know it works. I will not know it works unless I have used it myself, coached another person using it or proven it myself in scientific testing. Only when an idea survives that process will I put my name to it.
  2. Be prepared to change your mind. “The man who never alters his opinions is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.” William Blake. The pursuit of performance is a journey in which there will be setbacks, unforeseen obstacles and disappointments. Injuries are an example of this. To overcome a challenge, honest self-reflection is required. This is where a coach, mentor, friend or loved one can help us, but only if we are open minded enough to the possibility that we can be wrong, and that there is a better way. Be prepared to change your mind and you open possibilities for limitless growth and achievement.
  3. Walk the Walk. “Well done is better than well said.” Benjamin Franklin. I have been training for 20 years and coaching for 15, continually striving to improve, making many mistakes along the way. I will keep going because that is what I demand of myself and you are reading this because you are built the same way – you respect action above words.
